It’s Flu Season: How Late is Too Late to Get a Flu shot?

Flu season

Still haven’t had your flu shot? It’s not too late but the time to act is now!

Despite encouraging news about COVID-19 vaccines, the coronavirus is surging across America with hospitals in several states already becoming overloaded. As the peak of the flu season inches closer (December-February), the outlook for winter is grim. That’s why every precaution must be taken in order to avoid critically overwhelming our health care systems.

Getting a flu vaccination right now may prevent a worst-case ‘twindemic’ scenario if COVID-19 and influenza patients create a tidal wave of hospitalizations. Symptoms of the flu can be similar to the coronavirus, and a wrong diagnosis can be dangerous. “That’s one of the reasons we’re underscoring the importance of making sure you can help eliminate at least one of them, or at least mitigate one of them, by vaccination,” according to NIAID director Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Why getting the flu shot is even more important this year

Despite health officials urging everyone 6 months and older to get vaccinated, many U.S. adults (59%) don’t plan on it, according to a new study from the NFID. Among the top reasons for opting out are concerns over COVID-19 exposure. Another factor seems to be accessibility, as 25 percent of respondents reported being “more likely” to vaccinate if they had additional site options such as drive-thru clinics.

Creating convenient access points to preventive care has become more of a priority for employers. That’s why Eden Health is making workplace vaccinations simple with a new turnkey solution that supports a pop-up clinic that encourage employees and their families to get a seasonal flu shot. Eden members across the country are getting immunized at drive-thru clinics, office events, or by visiting a nearby Eden Health medical office.

As the holiday season begins, health experts are pleading that everyone wears a mask, keeps a safe social distance, and washes their hands regularly. Getting the flu vaccine will also help protect our family, coworkers, and everyone else in our community. Eden Health members can contact their provider to find out about walk-in availability or to schedule a flu shot appointment.
